Here is where you can find out what the man behind Executive Health Coach is really like?

We caught up with Matt Clough, one of the UK’s leading health coaches, to discuss his life, loves, interests and to find out if he really practices what he preaches.

Why executive health coach?

Personal training, by its very nature, often attracts people who may have the best of intentions but lack the application to follow those intentions through. The people who were real action takers, people who would challenge themselves and learn, were those with their own business, or high achieving business executives.

I like working with this clientele. I understand their key need – fast efficient workouts. But I also understand when they need that little push, because work can so often take over. I am their ‘angel on the shoulder’ who makes sure that they reach their goals.

Do you enjoy eating out?

Yes, it’s one of my favourite pastimes. Eating out, in quality restaurants, helps me maintain a healthy diet, contrary to what people think about eating out! Lifestyle balance is vitally important to our health.

What’s your favourite meal of the day?

Breakfast is often overlooked by so many people. It really is the only way to start the day. If I can make breakfast, and one that is nutritious and keeps me going through a busy morning, and at 5am, then I don’t see any reason why my clients can’t, no matter how busy they claim to be.

You must have a guilty pleasure?

I really love desserts, well actually I love cheesecake. The only time I will have dessert is in a restaurant when I see cheesecake on the menu. Once you learn how to strike the balance and are in full control of your nutrition 80% of the time, an occasional guilt free ‘treat’ like this rewards me to keep motivated and stay in control the rest of the time.

What would we find in your fridge?

High quality meat from the local farm, cheese, butter, Greek yoghurt, fresh seasonal vegetables, a few bottles of beer and a couple of bottles of champagne.

How do you find the time to exercise?

That’s like asking how do find time to shower in the morning? You just have to do it, I plan my workouts into my diary, just as I would for a client’s session.

And what do you get up to?

I tend to get bored with set exercise routines very quickly, so I try to keep my workouts as varied as possible. I mix weight training with kettlebells and body weight exercises and generally try to do three to four workouts like this every week, keeping each one different. I also do a lot of outdoor running and boxing with clients, which helps me to maintain a good level of fitness all year round.

What are your favourite holiday destinations?

I love to travel, but my favourite destination has to be New York. Nothing beats running in Central Park on a Sunday morning and, yes, I do take my trainers! They don’t take up that much room, or you could always treat yourself with a trip to NikeTown – provided you remember to go for the run afterwards that is!

And, on your day off?

Riding my motorbike to Whitby on a sunny Sunday morning, the full English breakfast at the Whistlestop Cafe takes some serious beating..or so i've heard?!
