Matt T, Risk Manager, Leeds

"The main thing I wanted was someone who would keep my motivation up and   make me do the activities I need to do to get fit. "

Why did you choose a Health Coach over a Personal Trainer?

I wanted someone who would help me change my lifestyle for the better, not just show me how to use different types of weight machines at the gym.

What were your expectations or goals?

The main thing I wanted was someone who would keep my motivation up and make me do the activities I need to do to get fit. I need someone to be on my back telling me to keep going – the problem I found with the gym was that it was too easy to say “I’ve done enough now” – Matt will just respond to this with “no you haven’t” and not let me get away with it!

...and in reality?

It has been exactly that. Matt can tell what your limits are, so he can push you to them, but will be careful not to push things too far. You really feel a sense of achievement after each of the sessions. One of the best things is that it’s never boring. Matt keeps adding different exercises into the sessions, bringing lots of variety. Also, Matt’s a great “life coach” – while I’ve been working out Matt has coached me on a number of business areas too – so I actually look forward to our training sessions rather than the old days of putting off going to the gym.

Matt understands that some things don’t work for everyone and is ready to accept and understand what you’re struggling with and help you find solutions.

What keeps you motivated?

For the first time in my life, I really feel like I can achieve the fitness goals I have set myself. At school, I was always the kid who was trying to find ways to get out of having to do sport, and when I didn’t succeed, was always last to be picked in sports teams. I hated sport as a kid, but I’m finding that I really enjoy the workouts with Matt.

What is/was the hardest part of the journey?

Keeping going when things get boring or stale. But I’ve realised now that you don’t have to. When I first started with Matt I stuck to a diet based on metabolic profiling. After about 9 months I was finding this unfulfilling, and started to stray. When I admitted that to Matt, instead of making me feel guilty, he said OK – let’s try something different. He referred me to a nutritionist, who was able to listen to what I liked and didn’t like, and I’m now back on track!

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be completely honest and open with Matt. He’s very inventive and can find lots of things that will really work for you, if he knows what it is that will and won’t work!

What would you say to those thinking about calling?

Matt is a really easy guy to get on with. He won’t give you the hard sell, make you buy expensive products, or make you feel bad about yourself in any way.
